What "research use only" actually means

Everything sold here is a synthetic reference material supplied to qualified researchers and institutions for in-vitro laboratory research. Each lot is assayed by an independent laboratory and shipped with a certificate of analysis stating its measured purity and identity. That is the entire description. Nothing offered here is a finished product of any kind, and no statement made by us describes a therapeutic use, a dosage or a health outcome — see the research use only page, which is the authoritative text.

The list on the research-use-only page is worth reading as a list, because each line closes a specific door:

• Not drugs, and not approved by the FDA for any use.
• Not dietary supplements, food, food additives or cosmetics.
• Not for human or veterinary consumption, ingestion, injection or application.
• Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
• Not for household or clinical use.

"In-vitro laboratory research" is what remains once each of those is excluded. That is the only category the material belongs in.

Orders are accepted only from purchasers acquiring material for legitimate laboratory research who meet the age requirement stated on the research-use-only page. Placing an order confirms both, and confirms that the purchaser will not administer the material to any human or animal. We may refuse, limit or cancel any order at our discretion, including where we cannot reasonably satisfy ourselves that the purchaser is a qualified researcher. Once material leaves our custody, handling is the purchaser's responsibility. Materials must be handled only by appropriately trained personnel using suitable controls and protective equipment. We do not publish preparation, dilution or usage instructions of any kind, and we cannot advise on them. What we do publish is the certificate, which states storage conditions and lot stability data. The regulatory status of a given material varies by jurisdiction. The purchaser is solely responsible for determining whether they may lawfully purchase, import, possess and use a material where they are located, and for complying with all applicable federal, state, local and international law. The one document that travels with every lot is the certificate of analysis, and it is worth noticing what kind of document that is. It is an analytical record — compound, lot number, assay date, method, measured purity, storage conditions — produced by a laboratory with no commercial interest in the result. It is not a product insert, not a leaflet and not a guide. A supplier that describes what a material is and stops there is a supplier whose materials sit in the research-use-only category by conduct as well as by label. A disclaimer that appears once, in a footer, is easy to miss and easy to claim not to have seen. One that appears on every page, every vial, every certificate and every email is a term of the transaction that nobody could have missed. That is why it is everywhere: not because we doubt our customers, but because the record should be unambiguous for everyone — the researcher, the supplier, and anyone who later asks what was agreed.
